A growing body of evidence shows that experiences in early childhood play a decisive role in shaping life outcomes, often more so than formal schooling. In other words, a significant share of a person’s future is influenced by the care, stimulation, and environment they receive in the first years of life.
Rethinking Early Childhood (REC), a conference sponsored by the Nova SBE Public Policy Institute (NPPI) and the EQUALNovaERA, brings together experts from many different disciplines to help us better understand what we know about early childhood and how public policy can promote equitable opportunities for all children from the very start.
There will be three sets of presentations, each with a thematic focus:
A: The Developing Child: Brain, Body, and Early Experience
B: Language, Learning, and the Early Years
C: Systems, Rights, and Policy for Early Childhood
The conference will take place on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at Nova SBE’s Carcavelos campus.
